Dentists discharge approximately 5.1 tons of mercury each year to publicly owned treatment works (POTWs); most of this mercury is subsequently released to the environment. In order to address this issue, the EPA has finalized the dental effluent guidelines to address mercury disposal in dental practices. The rule, which was effective July 14 will require some dental practices to implement an amalgam separator and other mercury reduction practices by July 14, 2020.
