The Security Rule requires that a risk analysis be completed in order to identify risks which may impact the confidentiality, integrity and availability of healthcare information stored in an electronic format. Once vulnerabilities are identified, a corrective action plan must be developed to outline how the entity will mitigate these issues.

The Security Rule – § 164.308
Risk analysis (Required). Conduct an accurate and thorough assessment of the potential risks and vulnerabilities to the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of electronic protected health information held by the covered entity.

This process is seen by some as daunting, but absolutely necessary to ensure that information is protected at the highest possible level.

After this session the attendee will:

  • Identify basic tenets of the required Security Risk Analysis
  • Define three specific areas a risk analysis addresses
  • Discuss specific measures to protect health information stored in an electronic format

This two hour lecture will walk the attendee through a risk analysis and the completion of a Corrective Action Plan. A risk analysis tool will be provided as well as several other tools to support the risk analysis process.
